A highly prized intelligence find rests on the bottom of Skagerrak Strait a Soviet Golf II class submarine equipped with three nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles. All that is needed is to find this needle in the haystack, lift a thirty-five hundred ton vessel from the ocean bottom unnoticed and secure it in a surface ship designed by the CIA for this purpose. A near impossible task, nonetheless a band of U.S. submariners agree to take it on.

A very interesting book indeed! The author weaves historical events with the fiction that makes the story entirely plausible. My only disappointment was the ending. The pace of the book was set, but then near the end, all the loose ends are tied up in one short chapter. Kind of an anti climax. Other than that, very well done. An enjoyable read.Product details

Skagerrak Submarine Classics by DM Ulmer DM Ulmer 9780988893054 Books Reviews
Writing in a real-time Cold War scenario the author crafts a totally credible situation in the North Sea involving participation of four Nations and a totally realistic cast of characters.
As an EX Navy man I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the by play of the characters. It was so true to life and what actually goes on. The politics of the BIG Brass is not new but enlightening.
Great story. I was in the US Nav when Howard Hughes Glomar Explorer pulled something like this off!! Of course we will never know the whole story on that one but from what I do know it was a futuristic Engineering feat!!
Loved the presentation, so realistic. A Soviet sub down in foreign waters, both them and the US after its secrets, bold moves. Cold war intrique without the need for a big battle. The characters are well defined and plot keeps you intrigued. Great job of weaving the pieces together.
Characteristic of Ulmer, this novel is rooted in realism and experience of a "been there, done that" sub sailor. This is a truly classic submarine story that is totally plausible. Read it and see for yourself - you won't regret it.
What was more important the submarine recovery and danger involved or a relationship between a widower and school teacher? Your cover suggest one not the other. More torpedoes and less love affairs.
A spectacularly written story that brings the true meaning of the Silent Srervice to the open stage. Described are the events that all but a very, very few submariners experience, both under water and occasionally on land. It is a well written book which I heartily recommend to anyone the least bit inclined to wonder what these very special people, these submariners are really all about.
A very interesting book indeed! The author weaves historical events with the fiction that makes the story entirely plausible. My only disappointment was the ending. The pace of the book was set, but then near the end, all the loose ends are tied up in one short chapter. Kind of an anti climax. Other than that, very well done. An enjoyable read.
